"Life shrinks or expands in proportion to one's courage." - Anais Nin
Are your fears causing you to have a small life, because you are too scared to venture beyond your comfort zone? Many people do this, and they are the only ones holding themselves back from achieving the greatness their hearts secretly dream of. |
Is your heart longing for something, that your ego or fear is preventing you from achieving?
What are you afraid of?
Are you afraid of failure, making mistakes or embarrassing yourself?
Or are you afraid of dreaming so big a dream that you will be told you can't do it?
Are these fears legitimate reasons to live your life without realising your dreams?
The simple fact of all this is, that unless we explore the world outside the perimeter of our comfort zone, we will remain as we are. We will not progress from what we are doing right now. And can you afford that to happen?
When we see someone who is achieving great things for themselves, we can be assured, that on a regular bases, they have expanded their comfort zone perimeter by pushing past the barriers. No greatness is achieved without doing this.
No matter what it is, you can be sure, that to make a difference, or to make your mark, requires courage to do the things that most people fear to do. Speaking in public requires practice, and at first, the courage needed to persist and practice this craft forces someone to push way past their comfort zone while initially risking embarrassing themselves.
When I first started writing in 2000, my burning desire to write overtook my fear of embarrassing myself, and those who read some of my first work, knew I was at the beginning of a long journey. I am so grateful to the few people who supported my feeble efforts in the early days, and read my work to encourage and support rather than to criticise.
It took me a lot of courage to write past my comfort zone, a lot of time, practice and mistakes. I had to risk embarrassing myself every time I sat at the open page. I was sick with nerves whenever I gave my work to anyone to read, again pushing past my fear and expanding my perimeters.
Thirteen years later, I am still pushing those boundaries, expanding my perimeter by exposing myself through my work to others to read in a public way. It has taken a lot of courage to feel comfortable about writing for everyone to see, but the journey has been worth every moment.
Fortunately, we only have to do one small step forward at a time. And when we take each step forward, our next step seems to be opened up to us in preparation. It is an amazing process.
