“There is a saying in Tibetan, 'Tragedy should be utilized as a source of strength.'
No matter what sort of difficulties, how painful experience is, if we lose our hope,
that's our real disaster.” ― Dalai Lama XIV

I often hear people say something like, “I don’t think or talk about the past, the past belongs in the past”, and immediately I have to wonder, what is in their past that frightens them so much.
For the most part, it is true that the past does belong in the past, however, there is much to be learnt and gained from looking back.

The analogy of the rear vision mirror and the front windscreen in a car works well for this. The rear view mirror is very small in comparison to the front windscreen, although both critical to the driving process.
Occasionally we have to reverse the car, so rely on the smaller mirrors (or side mirrors) instead of using the front windscreen. Obviously, we drive more forward than backwards, but still, we need all the mirrors and windows to make our journey forward safely and successfully.
If we were only looking forward, then we would miss out on what was coming up from behind that could cause us an accident. There might even be something we have gone past, that we may have missed seeing, and need to take a glace back to see it properly. The only time we have is now, in the present. We don’t have the future, and we are not in the past. Now is all we have.
However, as we have already come through the past, to help with our present and our future, looking back into the past can be helpful and therapeutic in many ways. We can look back to see how far we have come, and use this as a way to encourage us to go forward in strength. We can look back to situations that were difficult at the time, but through the pain, we learnt and grew.
The past contains lots of valuable information that we can use for our journey forward. If we dishonour our past by blocking ourselves from it, even with its difficulties and pain, we are effectively shutting ourselves off from the lessons learnt that are vital for building a better future.
Is there something in your past that frightens you to the point that you are putting blocks up, preventing you from having the future you really deserve?
